Fire doors are designed to offer an extra layer of protection
and to prevent the spread of fire. These specialty doors are made
of materials like steel gypsum and vermiculite boards and are
made with fire-rated seals around the edges. The seals are generally
composed of an intumescent strip that expands 600 times under
heat and neoprene weatherstripping.
Some fire doors are also manufactured with fire-resistant internal
windows made of wire mesh glass, ceramic and borosiliac glasses
filled with liquid sodium silicate between panes. These specialty
doors are often found in buildings with multiple floors and stairwells.
Fire doors are specially made using elements that stand up to
fire conditions and have impact resistance as well. These doors
are not usually used for residential or home applications, unless
it is an apartment building with several floors and indoor hallways
and stairways.
